Current Work of Learning Through Music in Minneapolis
Partnership with Ramsey School and Kenwood Symphony Orchestra (KSO) begun in 2003

- KSO serves the Ramsey School community with teaching and mentoring
- KSO provides Pen Pal Concerts for all school children
- KSO trains volunteer musicians for work in classrooms
- KSO invites teachers and students to participate in the concerts
Interdisciplinary teaching
- Development of eight interdisciplinary units based on music presented in Pen Pal concerts
- Creation of ‘cracking the code’ interdisciplinary units based on literacy, map reading and number skills
- Development of several year-long interdisciplinary integrated curriculum units, including: fourth-grade opera focusing on social studies topics, second-grade music circle focusing on social skills/language arts, and reading and rhythms drum circle focusing on reading fluency
Training

- Multiple workshops for entire Ramsey Staff
- Workshops for KSO members
- One-on-one training for teachers with LTM curriculum and assessment consultants
- Drum Circle training
- Parent training
- Training for Minneapolis Public School arts teachers
Assessment
- Review and refinement of assessment tools for music instruction by music teachers
- Development of scoring rubrics for curriculum units
- Implementation quality checklists
- Rich documentation of student work
Results 2003-2006
- Ramsey IFAC accepted into the Music-In-Education National Consortium as a model site, presenting at the 2005 national conference in Boston, Mass.
- Number of classroom teachers participating increased from 3 to 15
- Increased participation from music teachers
- Learning Through Music has become embedded in the mission of Ramsey school; participation is an expectation for all teachers
- Two on-site consultants, a musician and an experienced classroom teacher, deepen the curriculum design of all units
New developments in 2006-07
- Partnership with University of Minnesota School of Music Dept. of Music Education
- Internship program to train music education students
- Approved research project with Minneapolis Public Schools
- Relationship with MPS district fine arts department
- Hosting Music-In-Education National Conference in June 2007
